Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Sunday, honored the sacrifices of Nigerian Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives or sustained injuries while defending the country.
At a special church service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, to commemorate the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Governor Abiodun called for collective responsibility in upholding the legacies of the fallen heroes.
“Today, let us pledge to honour their memory, not only with ceremonies but with actions. Let us build a Nigeria where unity prevails over division, and where the sacrifices of our heroes inspire us to serve one another selflessly,” Abiodun stated.
He emphasized the need for Nigerians to support the families of fallen soldiers, noting that their welfare should not rest solely on the Nigeria Legion.
“We must ensure that the legacies of our armed forces remain alive, enshrined in the heart of our nation’s history and the fabric of our collective consciousness. This is a debt we all owe,” he added.
Rt Rev Emmanuel Akinrodoye, Bishop of Egba Diocese of the African Church, urged Nigerians to appreciate God despite the country’s challenges, stressing that acknowledgment of God’s blessings could lead to healing for the nation. He also called for adequate resources for security agencies to combat insurgency.
Meanwhile, in Ekiti State, Governor Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Mrs. Monisade Afuye, paid tributes during an interdenominational service marking the occasion. He lauded the bravery of military personnel and urged Nigerians to support families of the fallen and wounded soldiers.
“I pay tribute to our heroes, the veterans who fought so we may live in peace. It is essential to care for these veterans and their families, as this will incentivize our military personnel and bolster our national defence,” Oyebanji said.
He commended the efforts of the military in curbing terrorism and acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for appointing Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, an Ekiti native, as Chief of Army Staff—the first time in Nigeria’s history.
The General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Maj Gen Obinna Onubogu, expressed gratitude for government support in securing the nation.
Pastor Segun Awolumate, the Government House Chaplain, urged servicemen to remain committed to restoring peace and ensuring the nation’s unity.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s military personnel and the need for continued support for their families.
