House of Reps Members Propose Constitutional Amendments to Restructure Governance

A group of 35 members of the House of Representatives have introduced a bill aimed at instituting significant reforms in Nigeria’s political landscape. The proposed legislation seeks to implement a single term of six years for the President and state governors, among other key provisions.

During a press conference held at the National Assembly Complex on Monday, the lawmakers, operating under the banner of Reformed-minded Legislators, outlined their proposals, emphasizing the need for comprehensive changes to governance structures.

Speaking on behalf of the group, spokesperson Ikenga Ugochinyere highlighted the core objectives of the bill, including the rotation of the presidency among the country’s six geopolitical zones and the creation of two Vice Presidents from the southern and northern regions of Nigeria.

The proposed legislation also aims to enhance financial autonomy and accountability at the local government level, prescribing long-term imprisonment for the misuse of local government funds.

Furthermore, the lawmakers advocated for electoral reforms, proposing amendments to the Electoral Act to ensure simultaneous elections for all levels of government and stringent measures to prevent electoral fraud and misconduct.

Addressing the press conference, Ugochinyere stressed the importance of open dialogue on the nation’s challenges and aspirations, calling for constructive engagement to address pressing issues facing Nigeria.

Several members of the group, including Awaji-Inombek Abiante, Paul Nnamchi, and Matthew Nwogu, expressed support for the proposed amendments, citing the potential benefits of streamlining governance processes and reducing the cost of elections.
