Community leaders in Idemili North Local Government Area have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination campaign aimed at reducing the burden of cervical cancer, the second most common cancer among women in Nigeria.
This was emphasized during the Idemili North Stakeholders Engagement Meeting on HPV Vaccine Intensification held in Ogidi. The event, organized by the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHDA) in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health and partners, sought to mobilize community leaders for the vaccination campaign.
Speaking at the meeting, the Supervisory Councillor for Health, Dr. Nkem Okeke, stressed the importance of sensitizing communities about the vaccination, which officially begins on December 3, 2024. “We are here to sensitize you so that you can, in turn, sensitize your community members. This effort is crucial in reducing cervical cancer cases,” Dr. Okeke said.
Director of Health Authority, Mrs. Chinwe Okeke, explained that Idemili North had been identified as one of the three local government areas with low vaccine uptake, necessitating a repeat effort. She noted that cervical cancer is a deadly disease affecting the cervix and underscored the urgency of this intervention.
“This December, the vaccine will be available to everyone aged 9 to 14. From next year, it will be part of routine immunization for children aged nine,” Mrs. Okeke stated.
Deputy Mayor of Idemili North, Lady Phina Onwuachu, suggested targeting private schools and churches to ensure broader awareness and participation in the vaccination program.
Leader of Idemili North Councillors, Nze Anikpe, praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo for prioritizing the health of the target population by ensuring a second phase of the program.
The Chairman’s wife, Lady Ebere Nkwoka, also addressed lingering misconceptions, urging parents to disregard unfounded rumors about the vaccine and encourage their eligible children to get vaccinated.
This intensified campaign reflects the Anambra State Government’s dedication to protecting the health of its residents and eradicating preventable diseases like cervical cancer through proactive immunization programs.
