Idemili North Local Government Area has launched an intensive awareness campaign on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine following its introduction in Anambra State by the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo. The campaign included a road walk to inform the public about the importance of vaccinating girls aged 9 to 14 against HPV, a virus that can lead to cervical cancer.
The Director of Primary Health Care in the area, Mrs. Ifenyinwa Anigbogu, highlighted that the vaccine is free for girls who have not yet been exposed to sexual intercourse. The local government is partnering with civil society organizations, such as Save the World Foundation, to train vaccine champions within the community.
Mrs. Ukamaka Okpalanwankwo, the LGA’s mobilization officer, urged women to take advantage of the state government’s initiative to protect their daughters from cervical cancer. The vaccine rollout is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, and will be available at health centers, schools, churches, and other locations. Parents are encouraged to ensure their eligible children receive the vaccination.
Mr. Chima Asomba, the Programme Officer at Save the World Foundation, emphasized the organization’s role in mobilization and education efforts about cervical cancer. He addressed common misconceptions about vaccines, stressing that the HPV vaccine is safe and effective in preventing cervical cancer.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to complement state government health initiatives and ensure widespread vaccine acceptance and uptake.
