Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has warned officers of the Nigeria Police Force against the unlawful and prolonged detention of suspects, emphasizing that detainees must not be held beyond the legally stipulated period.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP stressed that officers found guilty of such violations would face strict disciplinary measures. He noted that unlawful detentions undermine public trust in the police and urged personnel to uphold professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.
Egbetokun cited Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee human dignity and personal liberty, as fundamental principles that must be upheld in pre-trial detentions. He also called for a culture of accountability within the Force, reiterating that any officer who violates these rights will face serious consequences.
Adejobi reaffirmed the commitment of the police leadership to ensuring that all individuals in custody are treated with respect and in accordance with the law, adding that the Force remains dedicated to both maintaining law and order and protecting citizens’ rights.
