In an effort to ensure public safety and uphold the right to peaceful assembly, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun held a virtual meeting with prominent lawyers Femi Falana and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, along with key members of the “Take-It-Back” Movement, regarding their planned nationwide protest.
During the meeting, Egbetokun stressed the importance of maintaining public order and safety. He acknowledged the group’s right to protest peacefully and reiterated the Police Force’s commitment to facilitating such rights within legal boundaries. He advised the group to coordinate with State Police Commissioners to plan the protests, ensuring the safety of participants and the general public while preventing security issues.
The IGP strongly recommended against spontaneous street processions due to potential dangers. He emphasized that organizing and collaborating with police and security agencies are crucial for mitigating risks and protecting the rights and well-being of all involved.
A statement from Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi quoted the IGP reaffirming the Police Force’s dedication to protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring safe public gatherings. The IGP called on all stakeholders to work together to create a peaceful and secure environment during the planned protests.
