Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha and a leading figure in the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, has called on communities nationwide to create a compendium of local rules and customs to aid in the prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). This initiative, he stated, would allow traditional institutions to effectively combat GBV within communities by providing culturally-aligned and accessible guidelines for judgment outside formal court systems.
The statement came during a recent advocacy visit by the Anambra State Multi-Stakeholders Action Committee on Gender-Based Violence (MAP-GBV) Prevention to his Ime Obi Palace in Onitsha. Igwe Achebe, who also chairs the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, highlighted that lack of awareness, skills, empowerment, and adherence to basic values are significant factors contributing to GBV.
In support of the initiative, Igwe Pius Omachonu, Chairman of MAP-GBV Prevention and traditional ruler of Olumbanasa, emphasized the committee’s commitment to collaborating with traditional leaders across Anambra State. The visit aimed to inform and establish connections with key stakeholders, facilitating effective strategies to reduce GBV. Igwe Omachonu urged Igwe Achebe to champion the cause, noting that his support would be instrumental in raising awareness and fostering community-led GBV prevention efforts throughout the state.
The committee plans to develop a more detailed framework on GBV definitions and prevention measures in collaboration with traditional authorities, integrating community-specific values and customs into their strategy.
