The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will officially commence activities for the Anambra State governorship election, scheduled for November 8, 2025, with an election notice set to be issued on November 13, 2024.
During his final quarterly consultative meeting with the media in Abuja, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu emphasized that the commission is required by law to publish the election timetable at least 360 days before the election date. This advance notice, he explained, is intended to allow adequate preparation by political parties, candidates, observers, media, and security agencies, ensuring a credible election process.
Professor Yakubu also outlined INEC’s ongoing preparations for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election on November 16, 2024, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to a free, fair, and transparent election.
Speaking at the meeting, Chris Isiguzo, President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), highlighted the security risks journalists face while covering elections and conducting investigative reporting. He commended INEC for maintaining open communication with the media, which he noted is crucial for promoting transparency in the electoral process and supporting responsible journalism.
The consultative meeting addressed key aspects of the election process impacting media practitioners, with a focus on creating a safe and enabling environment for fair election coverage.
