The lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has criticized the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, over his recent commendation of Ghana’s credible electoral process.
In a press statement issued on Monday, Ejiofor accused Yakubu of hypocrisy, stating that he lacked the moral standing to praise Ghana’s election when the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, conducted under his leadership, was marred by allegations of widespread irregularities and rigging.
Ejiofor said, *“I watched in utter disbelief as Nigeria’s own Prof. Mahmood Yakubu lavished praise on his Ghanaian counterpart for conducting a credible election that saw an opposition leader emerge victorious as President-elect. This is the same Prof. Yakubu who presided over the widely criticized 2023 Nigerian presidential election, marked by massive irregularities and subversion of the people’s will.”*
The lawyer further highlighted the contrasting outcomes of the elections, emphasizing that while Ghana upheld the sanctity of voters’ decisions, Nigeria’s election left millions disenfranchised and disillusioned. He also called out the unresolved issue of the alleged technical glitches in INEC’s server, which he claimed facilitated the manipulation of the electoral process in Nigeria.
