JAMB and Education Stakeholders to Set Admission Benchmarks on July 18

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will convene with vice-chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics, and provosts of colleges of education on July 18, 2024, to determine the cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions.

According to a notice obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, the meeting will be chaired by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman. The gathering will review the results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and discuss policy directions for admissions.

JAMB released the UTME results on April 29, 2024, with 8,401 candidates scoring 300 and above out of the 1,904,189 who sat for the exam. Additionally, 77,070 candidates scored 250 and above, 439,974 scored 200 and above, while 1,402,490 scored below 200.

During the meeting, the JAMB Registrar will present reports on the concluded UTME and ongoing Direct Entry applications. The analysis will include key performance indicators that may influence government policies on admissions.

The notice also mentioned that stakeholders will review issues from previous admission cycles and assess candidate performance in the current UTME to determine the minimum admissible score for the year. This annual meeting traditionally sets the admission requirements for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

This year’s policy meeting is crucial for establishing the admission benchmarks and initiating the admission process for the current academic year.
