The much-anticipated rematch between IBF world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois and former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is edging closer, with February tentatively set as the date, according to Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority.
Alalshikh confirmed the possible fight date while speaking at the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol press conference on Saturday. He revealed that a major fight card is being organized as part of the Riyadh Season, a series of entertainment and sporting events that runs from October to early March. The card will feature a 5 vs. 5 battle between rival promoters Queensberry and Matchroom.
“See in February again Queensberry against Matchroom, 5 vs. 5. We will finish it maybe this week with a big surprise,” Alalshikh told Sky Sports, hinting at a lineup that includes Joshua, Dubois, Tyson Fury, and Oleksandr Usyk.
Joshua’s unexpected loss to Dubois last month at Wembley Stadium shocked the boxing world. Dubois dropped Joshua several times before landing a devastating right-hand knockout in Round 5, marking Joshua’s fourth career defeat. Despite the setback, Joshua remains determined to continue his career, with his promoter Eddie Hearn confirming that the rematch will likely take place in Saudi Arabia during Riyadh Season.
Frank Warren, Dubois’ promoter, welcomed the rematch, pointing out that Dubois’ strategy of putting Joshua on the back foot was key to his victory. He expressed confidence in Dubois’ ability to win again, should Joshua choose to trade punches.
The heavyweight rematch promises to be a key moment in the sport, as both fighters look to solidify their positions at the top of the division.
