Concerns over alleged misconduct among judiciary staff in Anambra State have raised questions about efforts to achieve judicial excellence. Accusations of extortion, delays, and unauthorized practices were brought to light during a special court session marking the 2024/2025 legal year at the Judiciary Headquarters in Awka.
Mr. Afam Obi, Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen of eight branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Anambra, accused some judiciary staff of acting as “demigods” in their roles. He alleged that they often prepare legal documents, such as land agreements and affidavits, usurping the duties of lawyers. Mr. Obi called for a comprehensive overhaul, periodic transfers, and ongoing training of judiciary staff to address these issues.
Echoing these concerns, Awka-based lawyer Ejiofo Umegbogu accused court registrars of causing delays in the dispensation of justice by procrastinating on the typing and processing of court rulings. He also alleged that court bailiffs demand excessive fees to serve court processes, an act he described as a betrayal of their official responsibilities.
The Chairman of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Anambra Chapter, Mr. Henry Ezeoke, declined to comment on the allegations. However, the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, expressed concern over the reported misconduct. He assured the public that formal complaints against erring staff would prompt appropriate actions to restore integrity within the judiciary.
These revelations underscore the need for reforms to enhance efficiency and accountability in Anambra’s judiciary system.
