American reality star Kim Kardashian has revealed concerns that she is becoming emotionally numb as a result of past traumatic experiences. During the July 18 episode of “The Kardashians,” Kim opened up to her sister Khloe Kardashian about her ongoing mental health struggles.
Kim shared insights from her therapist, who suggested that her tendency to remain calm in stressful situations might be a response to being desensitized by trauma. “My therapist said, ‘You think calm is your superpower. I think you are so desensitized from trauma that you literally are frozen in fight or flight,’” Kim recounted. The therapist explained that staying calm during a traumatic event might have been beneficial once, leading Kim to adopt it as a constant coping mechanism.
Khloe speculated that Kim’s trauma response could stem from the 2016 Paris robbery incident. “You were never calm as a teenager, in your 20s. You cried about everything. You were bratty. You threw tantrums. Everything stopped after you got robbed, because you stayed calm in that situation and you even said, ‘My calmness is what kept me alive,’” Khloe said.
Reflecting on the robbery, Kim described the harrowing experience of having a gun to her head and being tied up and dragged across a hotel room. “The guy told me, ‘Just like, stay calm and you’ll live.’ And I did that,” she said. She acknowledged that while staying calm may have saved her life, it has also led to a level of emotional detachment that she now worries is making her seem robotic.
Kim’s candid discussion highlights the long-lasting impacts of trauma on mental health and the complex ways individuals cope with such experiences.
