King Sunny Ade Vows to Keep Onyeka Onwenu’s Legacy Alive Through Their Iconic Duet

Juju music legend King Sunny Ade (KSA) has vowed to honor the memory of the late music icon Onyeka Onwenu by performing their famous 1989 duet, “Wait for Me,” for the rest of his life. KSA made this commitment during a condolence visit to Onwenu’s family at her Ikoyi, Lagos residence, accompanied by the management of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN).

In an emotional tribute, King Sunny Ade reflected on his close relationship with Onwenu, describing her as an extraordinary woman known for her wisdom and guidance. “Onyeka was not just an ordinary woman; she had a way of offering advice that was always spot on. I will continue to perform ‘Wait for Me’ in her honor, as I have done in various countries, always giving credit to her,” he said.

Addressing past rumors of a romantic relationship between them, KSA clarified that the speculation was a playful gimmick they allowed to circulate due to their collaborations. “Before the launch of ‘Wait for Me,’ people assumed she was my girlfriend, but we neither confirmed nor denied it. At the song’s unveiling, many were surprised by the reality,” he explained.

Reggae legend Orits Williki also paid tribute to Onwenu, remembering her as a fierce advocate for justice and intellectual property rights. “Onyeka believed strongly in justice, especially when it came to her rights as an artist. She fought hard and even won a double Supreme Court judgment a few years ago. It’s heartbreaking that she’s gone, but her legacy will remain with us,” Williki said.

Onwenu, widely known as the “Queen of Songs,” left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s music industry, and her contributions continue to inspire artists and fans alike.
