Labour Party to Boycott Anambra LG Election Over Electoral Process Concerns

The Anambra State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has announced its decision to boycott the September 28 Local Government Area elections, citing concerns over electoral irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

Mr. Theo Egbe, the party’s Publicity Secretary, stated on Thursday in Awka that the LP would challenge the election process in court due to alleged failures to adhere to electoral guidelines. He emphasized that the state’s election process should align with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) standards.

Egbe also expressed concerns about recent amendments to the act governing political parties, dispute resolution, and election management. Additionally, he claimed that the party’s state office, located in Udoka Housing Estate, was sealed on August 27 by suspected state government agents without prior notice.

He called on LP members and supporters to remain peaceful and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

In response, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Special Adviser to Governor Charles Soludo on Political Matters, denied the allegations of government involvement in the sealing of the LP offices. Obiogbolu clarified that the issue was a dispute between the state housing corporation and the property landlord, unrelated to the state government.

He urged the LP to address its challenges directly and not attribute them to the state government.
