The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old US returnee, David Segun, alongside three accomplices, for allegedly murdering an Uber driver in the Obalende area of Lagos.
Commissioner of Police Ishola Olanrewaju, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters on Saturday, stated that the crime occurred on Thursday, January 9, 2025. According to Olanrewaju, Segun, along with Emeka Akwara (19), Samuel Ariori (21), and Lukman Ariori (19), ordered an Uber ride from Chevron, Lekki, to Obalende at midnight.
Upon reaching a deserted area in Obalende, the group reportedly attacked the driver, stabbing him multiple times in the neck. The suspects allegedly intended to steal the vehicle but were unsuccessful. Two of the assailants were apprehended at the scene by members of the community and handed over to the police, while the other two were later arrested in Chevron.
Describing Segun as the gang leader, Olanrewaju revealed, “He was sent back from America by his father, but his mother here could not handle him either. They will face criminal prosecution starting Monday.”
The deceased’s body has been deposited at Mainland Hospital, Yaba, while an investigation into the incident continues.
The police also paraded other suspects involved in cases of kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, and carjacking. Commissioner Olanrewaju commended the command’s intelligence-led policing during the yuletide season, which ensured a peaceful celebration in Lagos.
