Lagos State Environmental Agency Shuts Down Churches, Hotels Over Noise Pollution

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has taken decisive action against noise pollution, temporarily closing down five churches, 19 hotels, and several markets and shopping complexes between March 23 and April 26.

A tally by Saturday PUNCH revealed the extent of the enforcement measures undertaken by LASEPA, which targeted establishments contributing to noise pollution and other environmental infractions across various areas of the state.

Among the churches temporarily sealed were St. Monica’s Hall of Our Lady of Lord’s Catholic Church, Christ Rock of Fire Ministry, Wonderful Bible Prayer Ministries, God’s Porch Ministries, and an unnamed Catholic Church. Additionally, notable hotels affected by the closures included School2bar, Blue Seasons Hotel and Suites, Sulerious Lakeside Hotel, Monero Hotel and Suites, and Lekki Hotel and Suites.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared details of the enforcement actions via his official social media account. He highlighted the areas targeted for enforcement, including Ifako-Ijaiye, Abule-Egba, Alagbado, Command, Abesan Estate, and Dopemu.

Wahab emphasized the importance of compliance with environmental regulations, noting that the closures were necessary to compel adherence to established standards. He underscored the agency’s commitment to addressing noise pollution and other environmental breaches, stressing the need for businesses to prioritize environmental responsibility.

In a statement, Wahab outlined the affected establishments, which included not only churches and hotels but also bars, lounges, and confectionery businesses. He reiterated LASEPA’s dedication to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents of Lagos State.
