Lagos State University (LASU) has embraced technology in its teaching methods by adopting hybrid teaching for general courses, announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Mrs. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, during LASU’s 27th Convocation Lecture on Tuesday.
Under the theme “Embracing the Future: Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Humanity,” the convocation lecture highlighted LASU’s integration of technology into its educational framework.
According to Mrs. Olatunji-Bello, the infusion of technology allows students to access lectures anywhere on campus, reducing the need for crowded classrooms, particularly for courses with large student enrollments. She also mentioned the implementation of virtual examinations, which earned the university recognition as the most digitally advanced state university in Nigeria at the Nigeria Information Technology Awards.
“These innovations have not resulted in job losses for staff or compromised students’ learning experiences. Instead, they have enhanced learning and service delivery,” stated the Vice-Chancellor.
While acknowledging the benefits of technology, Mrs. Olatunji-Bello also addressed concerns about its potential to isolate individuals and erode human empathy. She emphasized the need to strike a balance between technology and humanity, harnessing technology’s power to improve lives while preserving human connections.
LASU remains committed to leveraging technology to enhance service delivery for its staff and students, she added.
In his remarks, the event’s chairman, Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, emphasized the intersection of humanity and technology and expressed gratitude to former Lagos State Governor Dr. Babatunde Fashola for his contributions to LASU’s growth during his tenure, including increased budgetary allocations and support for research innovation.
