LASUSTECH Vice Chancellor Raises Alarm Over Increasing Sexual Harassment Cases on Campus

The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has expressed deep concern about the rising incidents of sexual harassment within the university community. Speaking at the monthly Executive Management Meeting (EMM) with the university’s labor leaders held at the Council Chamber on the Ikorodu Campus, Prof. Odusanya underscored the urgent need to tackle this pervasive issue.

Prof. Odusanya highlighted alarming statistics, noting that studies in Nigeria reveal nearly half of university students have experienced sexual violence. “Sexual harassment is a scourge that must be eradicated from our campus. LASUSTECH has zero tolerance for sexual harassment in any form. We will not condone any behavior that compromises the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” he stated.

He also referred to the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2021, Section 264, which addresses unwelcome situations affecting academic and employment performance. Prof. Odusanya explained that sexual harassment encompasses a range of behaviors, including physical, verbal, and non-verbal conduct, stalking, and rape. Common forms of harassment on campus include inappropriate sexual jokes, unwanted physical contact, and persistent demands for sex by lecturers or students.

Identifying the various factors contributing to sexual harassment on campus, Prof. Odusanya emphasized the importance of collective action to combat the issue. He outlined the significant harms of sexual harassment, which include fear, mental health problems, shame, guilt, and increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV.

Reaffirming LASUSTECH’s commitment to creating a safe and conducive environment for all, Prof. Odusanya detailed the university’s policy on sexual harassment. The policy includes continuous sensitization of the university community, a strict zero-tolerance stance, prompt and confidential investigation of complaints, and the enforcement of sanctions and remedies. He also stressed the importance of upholding high ethical standards within the university.
