Automobile mechanics in Awka have raised concerns about the declining interest among youths in pursuing apprenticeship in the trade, warning that the profession faces the risk of extinction if immediate interventions are not made.
Speaking to ABS, several mechanics expressed alarm over the potential shortage of skilled professionals in the state in the near future.
Mr. Azuka Ogbonna, an experienced mechanic, attributed the trend to youths’ impatience and their desire for quick wealth. He called on the government to introduce incentives for apprentices, such as stipends or grants, to attract young people to the trade and secure its future.
Similarly, Mr. Abdulmalik Yahosa lamented that the perception of mechanics as financially disadvantaged discourages youths from joining the profession. He noted that this mindset has led to a critical shortage of skilled manpower, further aggravating unemployment and economic challenges.
Both mechanics urged the government to develop programs and campaigns that highlight the importance and profitability of automobile mechanics, emphasizing its role in economic growth and job creation.
The mechanics called for collaborative efforts to revamp the apprenticeship system, ensuring that the trade remains viable and appealing for future generations.
