Social media giant Meta has announced that starting July 1, 2024, Nigerian and Ghanaian content creators with at least 5,000 followers will be eligible to earn money on Facebook. The company introduced new monetization features, In-Stream Ads on Facebook and Facebook Ads on Reels, enhancing opportunities for creators to generate income from their content.
According to a statement from Meta, these features will allow creators to monetize original videos and foster community engagement. Eligible creators in both countries can now earn money for their video and reel content, with support available in over 30 languages globally.
“To use either product, creators must comply with Facebook’s partnership monetization policies and content monetization policies and be at least 18 years old. Additionally, for in-stream ads, creators must meet certain requirements, such as having a minimum of 5,000 followers,” the statement explained.
Commenting on the rollout, Moon Baz, Global Partnerships Lead for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey at Meta, said, “Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others, and bring people together. This expansion will empower eligible creators in the vibrant creative industry across Nigeria and Ghana to earn money while setting the bar high for creativity globally, making Meta’s family of apps the one-stop-shop for all creators.”
Baz elaborated on the types of In-Stream Ads, stating, “In-stream Ads can play before, during, or after on-demand videos, whether it’s pre-recorded content or when publishing a recording of a previous live stream. Types of In-stream Ads include Pre-roll Ads (which play before a video starts), Mid-roll Ads (which play during videos), Image Ads (static image ads that display beneath the content), and Post-roll Ads (ads which appear at the end of videos).”
She also highlighted the seamless integration of ads on Facebook Reels, allowing creators to get paid based on the performance of their original reels while entertaining their fans.
Meta’s initiative aims to bolster the creative economy in Nigeria and Ghana, providing a platform for creators to commercialize their art and storytelling skills.
