Mikel Obi Defends Osimhen Amid Chelsea Transfer Collapse, Denies Greed Claims

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has come to the defense of long-term Blues target, Victor Osimhen, following the collapse of a potential transfer to Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window.

Despite months of speculation linking the 25-year-old Napoli forward to a move to Chelsea or a Saudi Pro League club, Osimhen eventually secured a season-long loan deal to Turkish side Galatasaray. Reports had suggested that wage demands played a significant role in the failed transfer, with Osimhen allegedly earning over £200,000 per week at Napoli, a figure Chelsea was unwilling to match amid efforts to reduce their wage bill.

Speaking on his *Obi One Podcast*, Mikel, a Nigerian compatriot and former Chelsea legend, dismissed claims that Osimhen had priced himself out of a move, instead asserting that the striker was simply seeking fair compensation.

“I was involved in trying to make sure that I get Victor to Chelsea,” Mikel revealed. “A lot happened, and I’ve heard people saying that Victor is greedy. That’s not true. I know him well, and he’s not a greedy boy. He only wanted to get what he felt he deserved, and that’s not a problem.”

Mikel emphasized his close relationship with Osimhen, having known him since his early days with the Nigerian national team. He insisted that the forward’s demands were reasonable and that the situation was misrepresented in the media.

Chelsea, under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, has made significant efforts to reduce the club’s wage bill since taking over in 2022. With an average weekly wage now reportedly down to £60,000, the club was unwilling to meet Osimhen’s demands without a compromise.

While both parties are now left reflecting on the missed opportunity, it remains to be seen whether negotiations will be reopened in the future. Meanwhile, Osimhen is set to make his debut for Galatasaray against Rizespor, as he aims to help the Turkish champions retain their Super Lig title this season.
