The Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and solar lights on the Third Mainland Bridge by June to deter illegal mining activities on the infrastructure.
Umahi made this announcement following a routine inspection of the under-deck project at Iddo Bridge, Carter Bridge, and the Third Mainland bridges in Lagos. He commended the progress made by Berger, the contractor responsible for the bridges’ renovation.
During the inspection, Umahi noted the near-completion of the deck job on top of the bridges, with ongoing work on the piers and pier caps beneath the deck. He emphasized the Federal Government’s proactive measures to address the condition of the piles supporting the Third Mainland Bridge, which had been damaged by erosion and illegal mining.
The minister stated that a consultant would be engaged to assess and repair the damaged piles, highlighting the urgent need for action to prevent further deterioration.
Umahi underscored the importance of enhancing security measures on the bridges, announcing the installation of CCTV cameras and solar lights to monitor and deter illegal activities. He confirmed that similar measures would be considered for Carter Bridge, pending budgetary provisions.
Furthermore, Umahi addressed the broader infrastructure challenges across Nigeria, highlighting ongoing bridge projects in various states and expressing the government’s commitment to their completion.
He assured that the government would prioritize infrastructure development nationwide, in line with the president’s directives.
