The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a troubling outbreak of a mysterious illness in Sokoto state, resulting in eight fatalities and over 208 suspected new cases.
In an interactive session held yesterday with officials from the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Usman, the Manager of the NCDC, disclosed that the outbreak occurred in Sabon Birni and Isa Local Government Areas of the state.
Usman emphasized the swift response initiated by both NCDC and the state government to contain the spread of this unidentified disease, with samples swiftly dispatched to NCDC laboratories for analysis.
The illness presents with alarming symptoms including abdominal disorders, high fever, vomiting, and sudden weight loss, raising concerns among health authorities and the local populace.
Recently, Sokoto’s Deputy Governor, Idris Gobir, apprised the visiting Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, of the dire situation in Isa Local Government Area, where the mysterious disease has claimed numerous lives.
Expressing urgency, Gobir urged the Federal Government to intervene promptly to identify and contain the spread of the illness beyond affected areas within the state.
In response, the state government has mobilized a team of medical experts equipped with essential medications to assess the situation on the ground and provide immediate assistance to affected individuals.
Furthermore, the NCDC has deployed a National Rapid Response Team (NRRT) to collaborate with the Ministry of Health in conducting a comprehensive investigation into the outbreak, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the concerted efforts to address it swiftly and effectively.
