As Nigerians celebrate the festive season, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on citizens to prioritize their health by knowing their HIV status.
In a statement released on Sunday by the agency’s Director General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, and signed by the Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Toyin Aderibigbe, NACA emphasized the importance of making informed health decisions during the Yuletide.
“Christmas is a time for joy and celebration, but it also presents an opportunity to make informed and responsible decisions about one’s health,” Ilori said. “Knowing your status is a powerful step toward securing your health and protecting others.”
She encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the free and confidential HIV testing services available nationwide, adding that early diagnosis ensures access to lifesaving medication and a longer, healthier life.
Dr. Ilori also addressed the increased social activities associated with the festive season, urging the public to practice safe behaviors. “Use protection during sexual activities, and for those who choose abstinence, continue to uphold it as the safest option,” she said.
She noted that HIV, while still a significant public health concern, is no longer a death sentence due to advancements in testing and treatment. Ignorance, she added, is no longer an excuse given the widespread access to HIV education and testing services.
“This festive season, give yourself the gift of health by visiting the nearest health facility or community testing center to know your HIV status,” Dr. Ilori concluded. “Let us work together to create a healthier, happier Nigeria.”
NACA reaffirmed its commitment to reducing HIV spread and achieving an AIDS-free Nigeria.
