NAFDAC Urges Vigilance Against Counterfeit Products During Festive Season

As the festive season draws near, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to Nigerians to avoid consuming fake and adulterated products, which tend to flood the market during this period.

During an appearance at the News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, expressed concern over the increased circulation of counterfeit drinks, food, and medicines, which pose significant health risks.

**Health Risks of Counterfeit Products**
Prof. Adeyeye stressed that fake products could lead to severe health complications or even death. She particularly cautioned against purchasing medicines from unregulated vendors, such as roadside drug stores or hawkers.

“Do not buy medicines from corner stores, kiosks, or hawkers. Always purchase from a certified pharmacy,” she advised, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety over cost.

She also warned that drinks are among the most falsified products during the festive season and urged Nigerians to verify products by checking for NAFDAC registration numbers and expiry dates.

**Warnings to Bakeries and Water Producers**
NAFDAC also reiterated its prohibition of harmful chemicals like bromate and saccharin in bread production. Prof. Adeyeye disclosed that several bakeries had been shut down for violating these regulations, stressing that any bakery found using bromate or operating in unhygienic conditions would face strict consequences.

Similarly, water-producing factories operating below standard or in unsanitary environments have been closed. Prof. Adeyeye underscored the role of NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance in maintaining product quality and ensuring compliance with health standards.

**Key Recommendations**
1. Avoid buying medicines or food from unregulated sources.
2. Verify NAFDAC registration numbers and expiry dates on all products.
3. Report suspicious or substandard products to NAFDAC through their complaint channels.
4. Support certified businesses that comply with regulatory standards.

NAFDAC’s proactive measures aim to protect Nigerians’ health and well-being, especially during a season when the risk of counterfeit products is at its peak.
