The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially handed over an Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC) to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) in Igbesa, Ogun State, in a move to expand digital access and innovation in Nigeria’s education sector.
The project, implemented through the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), aims to enhance students’ learning experiences by providing a platform for digital research, skill development, and technological innovation.
At the inauguration and handover ceremony on Thursday, the NCC and OGITECH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure the effective utilization and sustainability of the Centre. The ETC is one of the USPF’s access projects designed to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide and promote inclusive technological advancement.
Equipped with 100 desktop computers, emerging technology applications, and high-speed internet connectivity, the Centre will provide students and faculty members with access to cutting-edge resources in fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
Speaking at the ceremony, USPF Secretary Yomi Arowosafe described the ETC as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s digital future.
“This Centre represents more than just bricks and mortar—it embodies a vision, a commitment, and an investment in the future of Ogun State and, by extension, our nation,” Arowosafe stated.
He emphasized that under the leadership of the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, and the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, the USPF has successfully implemented ICT access and connectivity projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, enhancing digital inclusion nationwide.
“With a student population of 9,300, OGITECH is one of Nigeria’s leading technology institutions. This project will significantly impact the institution and its surrounding community, fostering innovation, research, and entrepreneurial growth,” Arowosafe added.
Beyond academics, the ETC is expected to serve as an innovation hub, providing a platform for startups and small businesses to incubate and scale.
The Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, expressed gratitude to the NCC and USPF for selecting the institution for the initiative. He assured that the facility would be put to effective use and maintained in line with the sustainability framework outlined in the MoU.
“We will ensure that this project benefits not only OGITECH but also the wider community, contributing to skills development and technological progress,” Oluseye affirmed.
The USPF was established by the Federal Government to achieve universal access to ICT services, particularly in rural and underserved areas, ensuring greater social equity and digital inclusion across Nigeria.
