The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public alert, warning Nigerians of an increased risk of Lassa fever and cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) as the dry season intensifies.
Addressing the media in Abuja, NCDC Director General Jide Idris called for heightened vigilance to prevent further spread of these potentially fatal diseases.
According to NCDC reports, by mid-October, 174 people had died from Lassa fever out of 1,035 reported cases, while CSM has claimed 361 lives among over 8,500 suspected cases across 28 states.
The dry and dusty conditions prevalent in northern Nigeria are exacerbating the transmission of CSM, underscoring the need for prompt preventive measures.
