NDLEA and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Host National Conference on AI and Drug Abuse

The Department of Mass Communication at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), is hosting a national conference on communication, artificial intelligence (AI), and drug abuse.

The three-day event, taking place at the ETF auditorium of the university, concludes tomorrow, Thursday, June 6, 2024. Attendees include university students, staff, management, NDLEA officials, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Mr. Christian Aburime, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Empowerment, Dr. Nelson Omenugha.

Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Kate Omenugha, emphasized the conference’s aim to leverage communication and AI in combating drug abuse. She commended the NDLEA for its efforts through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) platform and urged students to apply the knowledge gained, warning against destructive communication practices.

The keynote address was delivered by NDLEA Chairman and CEO, retired Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa, represented by the State Commander, Mr. Daniel Onyisi. He described AI as the simulation of human intelligence by machines, highlighting its potential to enhance traditional counseling and medical treatments in addressing drug abuse. Marwa emphasized the need for ongoing research to improve AI algorithms and stressed the importance of using AI and effective communication strategies to support individuals in recovery.

Dr. Nonye Ezeaka, Acting Head of the Mass Communication Department, welcomed participants, noting the crucial role of communication in preventing drug abuse, promoting recovery, and reducing addiction stigma. She emphasized that the conference is a significant step in addressing these critical issues.

Professor Ezekiel Asemah, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Glorious Vision University, Edo State, delivered the lead paper. He highlighted the destructive impact of drug abuse on lives and urged students to safeguard their futures by avoiding drugs.

Dr. Gideon Nwafor, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, thanked the Acting Vice-Chancellor for supporting the conference, the resource persons for their contributions, and the committee members for their efforts.

The conference also included a courtesy visit to Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Kate Omenugha, a Q&A session, special recognition of the Acting Vice-Chancellor by NDLEA officials, and award presentations to deserving individuals.
