The National Examination Council (NECO) has announced the results of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), revealing that 828,284 candidates, or 60.55%, scored five credits, including Mathematics and English Language.
Prof. Dantana Wushishi, NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, made the announcement at the Council’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Thursday. He noted that a total of 1,147,597 candidates achieved five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics, representing 83.90% of those who sat for the exam.
Out of the 1,376,423 candidates who registered for the examination, 1,367,736 actually participated, with 702,112 males and 665,624 females.
Wushishi highlighted a significant decrease in examination malpractice, reporting 8,437 cases this year compared to 12,030 in 2023, marking a reduction of 30.1%. Additionally, 2,267 candidates with special needs participated in the exams, including 1,104 with hearing impairments and 348 with visual impairments.
The registrar disclosed that 40 schools were implicated in mass cheating across 17 states, and 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to various forms of misconduct. One school in Ekiti State was suggested for de-recognition due to mass cheating in multiple subjects.
Performance analysis revealed Abia State led the nation, with 83.40% of its candidates achieving five credits and above, while Katsina State ranked lowest at 2.42%. In terms of candidates scoring five credits, including Mathematics and English, Katsina also placed last with 42.00%, followed closely by Kano State at 44.42%.
