NEMA and SEMA Assess Flood Situation in Ogbaru, Urge Evacuations to Holding Centres

The Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has commenced an assessment of the flooding situation in Ogbaru Local Government Area. The tour was conducted to evaluate the current water levels and gather crucial data to inform both the federal and state governments.

Speaking during the tour, Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, Acting Zonal Coordinator for NEMA South East, noted that the visit follows predictions by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) regarding potential flooding this year. “The flood is here now,” she stated, adding that the federal government is taking steps to avoid being caught unprepared.

Mrs. Echeazu emphasized the importance of early warnings and sensitization, urging residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions to minimize property damage and prevent loss of life. She acknowledged a call from Mr. Afam Victor Ogene, the federal representative for Ogbaru, alerting authorities to the displacement of some residents who have already sought refuge in Holding Centres.

“I urge those yet to relocate to the Holding Centres to do so immediately while we await further assistance from the government,” she added.

SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Chief Paul Odenigbo, explained that the joint assessment with NEMA aims to provide first-hand information on the impact of the flooding, allowing for a timely report to the state government. He also mentioned that preparations are underway to evacuate more residents to safer locations until water levels recede.

One of the flood victims, Mr. Emeka Obi, appealed to the government for urgent relief, particularly food and medical supplies for women and children, noting that many arrived at the camps without basic necessities.
