In a recent interview, Ibrahim Gusau, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), acknowledged that the decision to appoint Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles was not taken lightly.
Following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, Finidi George, aged 53, was unveiled as his successor on Friday. His appointment came after careful consideration, with the former international footballer selected over his ex-teammate Emmanuel Amuneke.
Reflecting on the decision, Gusau stated, “It wasn’t an easy decision.” He emphasized the importance of trusting Nigerian talent and expressed confidence in Finidi’s ability to lead the team. “We’ve to begin to trust our own. We will give Finidi all the respect and support he needs,” Gusau affirmed.
Finidi George’s immediate task as head coach will be preparing the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with crucial matches against South Africa and Benin scheduled for June.
