Nigeria Governors’ Forum Acknowledges Widespread Hunger, Calls for Relief Amid Economic Reforms

Abuja – In a recent meeting under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in Abuja, state governors acknowledged the prevailing hunger and economic hardship across Nigeria, expressing their commitment to easing the burdens on citizens. Following a night-long discussion that stretched into Thursday morning, the governors praised President Bola Tinubu’s reforms aimed at stabilizing the nation’s economy.

During the session, Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), confirmed the complete removal of fuel subsidies. Kyari also addressed the recent fuel price hikes—occurring three times in just 60 days—and outlined measures to mitigate the resulting challenges faced by Nigerians.

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, speaking on behalf of the NGF, shared the governors’ hope for timely relief to offset current economic pressures. “We sympathize with our people and appreciate the ongoing reforms. Our prayer is for the benefits of these reforms to be felt as soon as possible,” Uzodinma said, stressing the governors’ desire to see improved living conditions for Nigerians.

Uzodinma highlighted a new partnership between the NGF and the African Medical Centre of Excellence, a high-tech hospital initiative funded by the African Development Bank. The facility will be managed by King’s College Hospital, London, and is set to offer specialized treatments in oncology, cardiovascular care, and hematology, establishing Nigeria as a regional hub for advanced healthcare.

In terms of security, the Director General of the Department of Security Services (DSS) and a representative from the National Security Adviser’s office also briefed the governors on enhanced security strategies to tackle issues like kidnapping and banditry. Uzodinma reaffirmed the governors’ commitment to supporting these efforts and promoting unity.

Addressing fuel subsidy removal specifically, Uzodinma endorsed support for local refining efforts, especially through Dangote Refinery, as well as the revitalization of Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries. “Producing our own petroleum products is essential,” he noted, emphasizing the goal of boosting local job opportunities and reducing crime.

The governors pledged continued collaboration with the national government and private sector, voicing optimism that, with united efforts, Nigeria can overcome current challenges and achieve a more stable and prosperous future.
