Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, delivered a commanding performance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, defeating Ecuador 4-0 in their second Group A match on Saturday night at Estadio Cibao, Santiago de Los Caballeros.
Under the guidance of head coach Bankole Olowookere, the Nigerian side dominated from start to finish, earning their place in the tournament’s quarter-finals with a perfect six points from two matches—the first team to do so.
Shakirat Moshood starred for the Flamingos, scoring twice, including an opening goal from the penalty spot in the 28th minute and a second strike deep into stoppage time. Harmony Chidi extended Nigeria’s lead in the 54th minute, while Peace Effiong added a third, sealing a comprehensive victory.
Nigeria’s relentless attacking pressure saw them take 31 shots, with 13 on target, keeping Ecuador on the back foot throughout the match.
Having previously defeated New Zealand 4-1 in their opening game, the Flamingos are now expected to secure another win when they face the Dominican Republic in their final group game on Wednesday at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo.
The Flamingos, who finished third in the last edition of the tournament in India, have reached the quarter-finals in three previous editions and will be looking to surpass their historic 2022 semi-final appearance.
