The Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIAASC), State Chapter, has lauded the leadership of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) for its ongoing initiatives aimed at transforming the Awka Capital Territory. This commendation came during a courtesy visit to the ACTDA office in Awka on October 9, 2024.
Dr. Ikenna Onorah, Chairman of NIAASC, emphasized the significance of fostering closer collaboration with ACTDA to enhance various developmental projects in the region. He reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to supporting the “Solution Mandate” initiated by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, which aims to promote sustainable growth throughout the state.
In recognition of his visionary leadership, Dr. Onorah presented the Managing Director of ACTDA, Mr. Ossy Onuko, with an honorary membership in NIAASC. In response, Mr. Onuko expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the crucial role architects play in urban development. He acknowledged the Institute’s contributions to the successes of ACTDA and reaffirmed his dedication to forging partnerships that align with the state’s broader goal of creating a liveable and prosperous homeland, as envisioned by Governor Soludo.
Architect Aniegbuna Augustine, a lecturer from the Department of Architecture at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, delivered the vote of thanks. He stressed the urgent need for stricter urban planning regulations to manage unregulated building practices, fencing, and drainage systems. Augustine warned that without these controls, Awka risks losing its aesthetic value and may deteriorate into slum-like conditions, underlining the importance of adhering to the city’s master plan.
