The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted significant thundery and rainy weather conditions across various parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday. The weather outlook, released on Saturday, indicates that thunderstorms are expected in several northern states, including Borno, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe, particularly during the morning hours on Sunday.
According to NiMet, these storms will likely intensify, affecting most of the northern region during the afternoon and evening hours.
In the North Central region, areas such as the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States are also expected to experience thunderstorms and rain during the morning, with these conditions continuing later in the day. Southern cities will see cloudy skies in the morning, with intermittent rain forecasted for later in the day.
Moving into Monday, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe, and Jigawa States. The northern region is expected to experience further thunderstorms as the day progresses.
In the North Central region, NiMet forecasts morning thunderstorms with rain over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States. The afternoon and evening hours will likely bring thunderstorms to the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, and Niger States, with cloudy skies expected over southern states.
By Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are predicted over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States in the northern region, with cloudy skies anticipated later in the day. In the North Central region, morning thunderstorms with rain are expected over parts of Niger and Kwara States, with further thunderstorms anticipated in Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue States during the afternoon and evening hours. The southern region is expected to experience intermittent rain throughout the day.
NiMet has advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas, warning of a high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities due to the anticipated heavy downpours. Additionally, strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. The agency has urged the public to adhere to safety advisories from relevant authorities and stay informed by accessing weather updates through NiMet’s official website.
