The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an immediate rollback of the recent hike in petrol prices across the country. The NLC issued this demand in a post on its official X page on Tuesday night, following the announcement by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) that the pump price of petrol had been raised from N617 to N897 per litre.
The union’s president, Joe Ajaero, expressed strong disappointment with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that the NLC felt betrayed by the latest increase. Ajaero emphasized that the NLC had agreed to a new minimum wage of N70,000 based on the understanding that there would be no further increases in fuel prices.
Ajaero further warned that the NLC’s leadership would convene in the coming days to decide on the appropriate course of action, which will be made public.
The NLC’s stance comes amid widespread concern over the impact of the price hike on the cost of living for Nigerians.
