NMA Anambra Directs Withdrawal of Clinical Services to Protest Kidnapping of Doctor

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Anambra Branch, has instructed its members to withdraw clinical services from all private and public hospitals starting Thursday night. This action comes as a protest against the kidnapping of Dr. Stephen Ezeh, who has been held captive since August 15.

The directive was issued following an emergency general meeting on Thursday, led by branch chairman Dr. Princeston Okam and secretary Dr. Ifeanyi Obiaeli. The NMA’s decision follows an ultimatum given on August 19, demanding Dr. Ezeh’s release within 48 hours, which has since elapsed without any resolution.

The NMA stated that despite appeals to the state government and the passage of the ultimatum, Dr. Ezeh remains in captivity. The association has announced that all clinical services in federal, state, private, mission, institutional, and corporate hospitals across Anambra will be suspended until Dr. Ezeh is released.

The statement emphasized that the NMA Anambra will monitor compliance through a “Strike Monitoring Team” and warned that non-compliant hospitals and members will face penalties. The association has also called on the Anambra Government to use all available security resources to ensure the swift and unconditional release of Dr. Ezeh.

Acknowledging the potential impact on public health, the NMA appealed to the state government to act quickly to resolve the situation and restore normalcy. The association also praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Commissioner for Health Dr. Afam Obidike for their efforts to enhance healthcare and security in the state, and commended doctors for their dedication to providing quality care.

The NMA Anambra branch remains committed to working with government agencies to ensure a secure and healthy environment for the people of Anambra.
