As Cameroonian authorities release water from the Lagdo Dam, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued an urgent warning to residents of Ayamelum Local Government Area, Anambra State, urging them to take immediate measures to protect their lives and property from the imminent risk of flooding.
During a flood sensitization campaign in Anaku, a community within the flood-prone Ayamelum LGA, NOA’s State Director, Mr. Edozie Ajaegbu, emphasized the importance of clearing drainages around homes and avoiding the construction of buildings near water channels. He urged residents to be proactive by understanding flood patterns and taking preventive steps to avoid disaster.
Deputy Director of Programmes, NOA Awka, Remigus Obi, informed the community that Anambra is one of 11 states expected to be affected by the floods, with Ayamelum likely to face severe impacts. “We urge you to help NOA by encouraging your people to relocate from flood-prone areas for their safety,” he added.
Other NOA officials, including Barr. Ifeoma Chijioke, Deputy Director of Administration, and Mr. Obiorah Ignatius, Assistant Director of Programmes, stressed the importance of early crop cultivation to mitigate losses caused by potential flood devastation.
Paul Nwauba, the President-General of Anaku Community, expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, pledging the community’s cooperation and readiness to adhere to the safety recommendations.
The campaign concluded with the distribution of sensitization materials aimed at raising awareness about flood preparedness.
