Nollywood Actor Uzor Arukwe Reflects on Social Media Influence in Film Casting

Renowned Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has opened up about the era when social media following served as a determining factor for actors securing roles in the Nigerian film industry.

Arukwe revealed that filmmakers often prioritized actors’ social media followings over their talent when casting for movie roles.

The star of ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ acknowledged facing significant challenges during his early years as an aspiring actor.

Recalling his struggles, the 40-year-old actor shared his experiences with Pulse in a recent interview, stating, “I remember all so clearly when I started. It was a big problem for me.”

He elaborated on the prevailing industry trend, highlighting the emphasis placed on Instagram and Twitter followers by production houses. Arukwe emphasized the dichotomy between social media metrics and acting prowess, expressing his perplexity at the phenomenon.

Despite the challenges posed by this trend, Arukwe maintained his focus on honing his craft, emphasizing the importance of acting skills over social media metrics. He lamented the prioritization of numbers over talent but acknowledged the success of some actors who possess both exceptional acting abilities and a substantial online following.
