NSCDC Apprehends Eight Illegal Private Guards, Recovers Illegal Firearms in Anambra

The Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has made significant strides in combating illegal private security operations, resulting in the arrest of eight individuals and the recovery of illicit firearms.

Commandant Olatunde Maku disclosed that the crackdown on unlicensed private security guards in Awka led to the apprehension of the suspects and the seizure of four pump-action guns along with 16 live cartridges. Speaking at the agency’s headquarters in Awka, Maku reiterated the NSCDC’s commitment to regulating private security operations, particularly amidst prevailing security challenges.

“We are resolute in our mandate to oversee private security operations within Anambra State,” stated Maku. “The recent arrests were made following a raid conducted on Thursday, April 25, 2024, targeting illegal private guards in Awka.”

Maku elaborated that some of the apprehended individuals were posing as members of the Anambra Vigilance Group, while others were employed by hotels despite lacking proper licensing or registration. He emphasized the ongoing effort to dismantle illegal security outfits, prevent the proliferation of unregulated guards, and mitigate security breaches and criminal activities.

“The command is determined to root out illegal security operations and ensure the safety of all Anambra residents,” Maku affirmed. “This operation signifies a significant achievement in our endeavor to combat crime in the state.”

Maku issued a stern warning to all illegal security outfits, urging them to cease operations immediately or face legal consequences. He assured that the suspects are undergoing thorough investigation and will be prosecuted accordingly.

“With our unwavering stance, we aim to restore order in the private security sector and uphold the security of Anambra residents,” Maku concluded. “We will continue to uphold the law and hold accountable those who jeopardize public safety.”
