NUC Endorses Open Distance Learning as Cost-Effective and Accessible

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has endorsed Open Distance Learning (ODL) as a cost-effective and adaptable educational method suitable for various learning contexts in Nigeria. This endorsement was highlighted during a public lecture organized by Miva Open University, which took place at the NUC Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

Miva Open University, an institution licensed by the NUC, offers a diverse range of academic programs accessible to students worldwide.

In his keynote address titled “The Changing Role of University Administration in an Open Distance Learning Setting,” Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, emphasized the unique advantages of ODL in the digital era. He described ODL as a method that transcends traditional educational barriers, making learning accessible across different locations and contexts, including primary, secondary, tertiary, vocational, and non-formal education.

Maiyaki stated, “ODL is a cost-effective method of education that transcends time and space, suitable for diverse educational contexts. Its flexibility allows for learner-centered approaches, moving beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom boundaries.”

He also highlighted the potential of ODL in addressing Nigeria’s educational challenges, noting that nearly two million Nigerian students apply for university admission each year, but the country’s 274 universities can only accommodate between 500,000 and 700,000 students. “With ODL, we can bridge the gap between demand and supply, broadening access to university education for more Nigerians,” Maiyaki added.

Former NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Emeritus Julius Okojie, also spoke at the event, underscoring ODL’s potential to democratize education in Nigeria.

The Deputy Executive Secretary of the NUC, Dr. Nuel Salihu, further outlined the commission’s support for the expansion and implementation of ODL programs.

Professor Tayo Arulogun, Vice-Chancellor of Miva Open University, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance tertiary education. In his remarks, Miva Open University’s Chancellor, Sim Shagaya, emphasized the role of technology in reshaping higher education, advocating for healthy competition and collaboration among educational institutions to build a more dynamic and effective education system.

Registrar Iheanyi Akwitti concluded the event with an overview of Miva’s ODL programs, reiterating the university’s dedication to providing accessible, technology-driven education for all.
