The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn corps members from Mbaa, a community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, following escalating security threats.
The decision was confirmed in a statement on Thursday by the NYSC Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations in Benue, Yahuza Adamu. According to Adamu, the withdrawal became necessary due to persistent attacks on the community, allegedly carried out by suspected armed herders.
Recent violence in Kwande LGA has resulted in over 20 deaths, including 16 farmers whose bodies were reportedly dumped in River Katsina-Ala. The attacks have turned parts of the local government into a hotspot for conflict.
Adamu assured parents and guardians that the NYSC remains committed to the safety and welfare of corps members, working closely with security agencies to ensure their protection.
“Since the onset of the attacks in Mbaa, which shares a boundary with Cameroon, NYSC has withdrawn all corps members from the area and has not posted any there since then,” the statement read.
He further stated that the State Coordinator had directed the NYSC Kwande Local Government Inspector to conduct a headcount, confirming that all corps members in the LGA were safe and accounted for.
The NYSC also clarified that Jato Acka Turan, where corps members are currently stationed, is far from the affected areas and does not face security threats.
Adamu urged parents and guardians to rely on official NYSC channels for accurate updates on the safety of corps members.
