Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on President Bola Tinubu to extend the benefits of the Student Loan Scheme to students of private universities, expressing concern over potential corruption in its implementation.
Obasanjo made these remarks during the inauguration of the Asiwaju Onafowokan, Coleman Wires and Cables building at Bells University’s College of Postgraduate Studies in Ota, Ogun State.
Highlighting the need for inclusivity, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of incorporating students from private universities into the Student Loan Scheme. He expressed doubt regarding the scheme’s ability to operate without corruption but stressed the necessity of its implementation for societal development and citizen welfare.
As the proprietor of Bells University of Technology, Obasanjo underscored the significance of ensuring that all segments of society benefit from the loan scheme to prevent counterproductive exclusion.
This call comes amidst statements from Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), indicating that students in private institutions would not be eligible for the loan scheme.
