Obinikpa Football Club has solidified its status as Amaokpala’s football powerhouse by clinching the 2024/2025 Amaokpala Football Tournament title after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Ajango FC.
The defending champions replicated their 2023/2024 triumph, once again denying Ajango FC the coveted title in a nail-biting finale organized by the Amaokpala Development Union, Diaspora Branch.
The match, held at the Holy Ghost Academy Pitch in Amaokpala, ended 0-0 after regulation time despite both teams showcasing remarkable skill and determination. The deadlock led to a penalty shootout, where Obinikpa FC’s goalkeeper emerged as the hero, making a decisive save to secure a 1-0 victory.
The loss marked another heartbreak for Ajango FC, who have now reached the finals for three consecutive years without clinching the title.
Obinikpa FC took home a ₦500,000 cash prize, while runners-up Ajango FC received ₦200,000. Third-place winners Amaokwe FC were awarded ₦100,000, with consolation prizes given to other participating teams.
Speaking after the victory, Obinikpa FC’s coach, Mr. Samuel Nwankwo, attributed their success to teamwork, hard work, and unwavering fan support.
Dr. Chukwudi Okeke, Coordinator of the Amaokpala Development Union, Diaspora Branch, commended both teams for their sportsmanship and highlighted the tournament’s significance.
“This event not only entertains but fosters unity and helps identify talents within the community, empowering them to represent Amaokpala locally and internationally,” Dr. Okeke said.
