In a concerted effort to ensure orderliness and ease traffic congestion within Onitsha markets during the festive season, the OCHA Brigade has ramped up its operations against roadside trading. The enforcement team has been confiscating goods from traders who display their wares along the roads, despite having designated shops within the market premises.
Addressing journalists in his office, the Zonal Commander of the Anambra North OCHA Brigade, Mr. Daniel Martin Obiefuna, highlighted the significance of maintaining a clean and orderly market environment. He noted that the brigade’s primary focus is on road decongestion, which has been undermined by traders who abandon their shops to sell on the streets.
“Some traders with shops in Onitsha markets prefer selling along the road. After repairs are done on these roads, such activities compromise the cleanliness and orderliness of the area,” Commander Obiefuna stated.
He warned that the brigade would adopt a stricter stance going forward, with offenders facing legal action. “We generally do not return seized wares, but today we are making an exception by releasing some confiscated goods. However, case files have been opened to handle future violations,” he revealed.
The Commander urged market leaders and traders to cooperate with the Brigade to ensure the markets remain clean and accessible, especially during the busy holiday period. He also appealed to market leaders to support the government’s policies aimed at creating a healthier and more organized trading environment for all.
This crackdown comes as part of broader efforts to maintain order and improve the market experience for traders and shoppers alike in Anambra State.
