The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Dr. Felix Chinedu Odimegwu and his team have visited Alor erosion site located at Umuru Ide Village, Alor Community, Idemili South LGA to ascertain the level of damage in the affected area and proffer Solutions on how best to tackle the challenge.
Odimegwu disclosed that the erosion has significantly expanded, cutting off a portion of the existing road in the area, thus posing threat to nearby buildings, risking potential damage if left unattended
However, he commended the community for their efforts in maintaining green zones, while stressing the importance of tree planting, building catchment pits, erecting good drainage systems, channeling all run-off sources of water into drainages in all residential construction projects to prevent future erosion risks.
The Commissioner assured the community that the government of Prof. C.C Soludo is fully committed to restoring the area and implementing long-term erosion control measures. He emphasized the need for continued community participation and support in observing environmental sustainable ethics and laws.
In their various speeches, the Community leaders Chukwudi Johnson and Chief Okudo expressed their gratitude to the Commissioner and his team for their visit and commitment to addressing the erosion issue.
They pledged their full support for the government’s environmental policies and initiatives by collaborating with the government to enforce environmental laws, implementing sustainable practices in residential and community development, ensuring that catchment pits are built in every compound and effective drainage systems are included in all new constructions.
In attendance were; Hon. Ebuka Igwe (Member, Anambra State House of Assembly), Hon. Okey Elosiuba (Ex-President General, Alor People’s Convention Caretaker Committee), Hon. Okey Ojudu, and others.
