The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Bukola Olabode, for allegedly defrauding Point of Sale (PoS) operators and residents of Ihunbo in the Ipokia Local Government Area by impersonating a police officer.
According to reports, the suspect was apprehended by residents on Tuesday and handed over to officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) before being transferred to the police at the Idiroko Division.
Olabode’s modus operandi involved wearing a police camouflage shirt paired with jeans to carry out fraudulent transactions at PoS stands. His downfall came when he attempted a similar act at the PoS station of an operator named Mary Midoyin. When his deception was discovered, the suspect fled the scene but was chased down by residents and caught.
The Police Command confirmed that Olabode had made a fake transfer of N60,000 to the operator before fleeing. However, he was quickly apprehended and handed over to the authorities. A Samsung phone, an Itel phone used for the fraud, and a police constabulary warrant card were recovered from him during his arrest.
Olabode has confessed to defrauding PoS operators in the area. He remains in police custody as investigations continue. This case follows a similar incident in 2022, where a man, Akinyemi Thomas, was also arrested for impersonating a police officer.
