A tragic incident has unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, as a student, identified as Ariyo, reportedly died after allegedly receiving 162 strokes of the cane from a teacher. The punishment, which was said to be administered for breaking a dustbin, has sparked outrage and grief within the community.
An activist, Adetoun, brought the incident to public attention on social media, explaining that the teacher had instructed students not to damage a new dustbin brought into the classroom. Ariyo allegedly responded in jest, mentioning that the dustbin was purchased with the students’ funds. His remark reportedly angered the teacher, who reported it to the principal, leading to the directive for punishment.
Following the principal’s instructions, the teacher allegedly administered 162 strokes, during which Ariyo reportedly collapsed. Adetoun also claimed that school staff delayed taking Ariyo to the hospital, and by the time he arrived, he was pronounced dead.
A senior police officer confirmed the incident, noting that tensions in the area were calmed through police intervention. The Ogun State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
The community continues to mourn the loss as calls for investigation and accountability grow.
