Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has announced Fidelis Chukwu as its new president-general to complete the Imo State tenure, which ends on January 10, 2025.
The appointment follows the deaths of two previous leaders from Imo State, including Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25, 2024. According to a statement by Alex Ogbonnia, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Chukwu’s appointment was made in adherence to the “doctrine of necessity” to ensure the continuation of the Imo State tenure.
“The people of Imo State presented Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu to Imeobi Ohanaeze for the replacement of late George Obiozor. By the application of a doctrine of necessity, Iwuanyanwu was sworn in on April 30, 2023. Unfortunately, Chief Iwuanyanwu died on July 25, 2024, and was buried on November 1, 2024,” the statement explained.
To complete the tenure, the Imo State Chapter of Ohanaeze, led by C.J. Ihemedu, presented Chukwu for adoption by the Imeobi Ohanaeze. His nomination was moved by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, Chairman of the Imo Council of Elders, and seconded by Chief Simon Okeke (Ochendo).
### Leadership Transition
Elders present during the appointment described Chukwu as a “cerebral thinker with sterling qualities,” expressing confidence in his ability to lead the organization effectively.
Lucky Ekeji, President of the Rivers State Chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, also expressed his satisfaction with the decision, highlighting Chukwu’s potential to further the unity and progress of the Igbo people.
The new president-general takes office at a critical time for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, with expectations high for him to uphold the organization’s mission of promoting Igbo interests and fostering peace and unity across Nigeria.
